Traditionally, the 8th of February is celebrated as the Day of Russian Science - a holiday dedicated to the date of Russian Academy of Sciences foundation by Emperor Peter I in 1724. On the eve of such important date for the entire Russian scientific community, the Research Station of the Russian Academy of Sciences in Bishkek city (RS RAS) sums up the results of 2021.

In 2021, according to the Long-term Program of Fundamental Scientific Research in the Russian Federation (2021-2030), the Research Station of the Russian Academy of Sciences in Bishkek city (RS RAS) carried out research in the following areas:
Area of scientific knowledge: 1. Natural sciences
Direction of science: 1.5. Earth sciences

Direction of fundamental and exploratory scientific research

Section of fundamental and exploratory scientific research

1.5.1. Geophysics

1.5.1.1. Geophysical methods for studying the structure, material composition of the earth's interior and deep processes; interaction of geospheres

The study of deep structure of the Tien Shan and surrounding areas using a set of geophysical methods to determine the relationship between the transfer of matter-energy in the Earth's crust and upper mantle with the spatial and temporal distribution of seismicity

Anatoly Rybin

1.5.1. Geophysics

1.5.1.6. Study and forecasting of catastrophic phenomena (earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, tsunamis); seismic, volcanic and tsunami hazard assessments

Study of geodynamic, seismic and geophysical processes as the basis for earthquake prediction (including modeling of inelastic processes in seismogenic zones)

Vladimir Sychev

1.5.12. Metrology and digitalization in Earth sciences.

1.5.12.2.  Development of equipment and methods for remote sensing of the Earth, including new measurement and data processing systems

Development of hardware and software tools and fundamentals of technology for electromagnetic monitoring of geodynamic processes in seismically active zones and assessment of their hazards

Vladimir Bobrovsky

Based on the results of research in 2021, two most important results were obtained:

1. The geoelectric structure of the Son-Kul depression zone and its mountainous framing (Central Tien Shan) was determined;

2. For the territory of the Tien Shan, the general agreed directions of main horizontal deformation axes and their differences by the regions based on GPS methods and seismotectonic deformations were assessed.

Of course, the list of results obtained by RS RAS staff in 2021 is not limited to the two indicated. More information on the results of RS RAS research can be obtained from scientific papers published this year in high-ranking Russian and foreign journals and in collections of proceedings of international conferences. Another important scientific achievement in 2021 was the defense of a Ph.D. thesis, which was carried out at the Research Station.

Also in 2021, the joint scientific workshop "Geological and geophysical monitoring of the Tien Shan lithosphere" starts the work actively – it is expected to discuss new results, methods and problems of geological and geophysical monitoring of modern geodynamic processes, to continue the study of physical and chemical properties rocks, the stress-strain state of the Earth's crust in seismically active regions and other topical issues in the area of Earth sciences and related areas of theoretical and experimental Physics.

As part of the State task, in order to replenish the field databases, during 2021, the RS RAS staff carried out field magnetotelluric, seismoacoustic, geomagnetic and GPS observations in the Tien Shan.

Particularly, we would like to note the work of RS RAS staff of in the framework of scientific projects funded by the Russian Foundation for Basic Research and the Russian Science Foundation. In 2021, the research under the RFBR grant No. 20-05-00475 "Theory and practice of creating a system for seismo-electromagnetic monitoring of the geodynamic activity of the Tien Shan lithosphere" were continued (headed by A.K. Rybin, Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences). Also, the Research Station took part in the competition of small individual scientific groups, held by the Russian Science Foundation, with the project "Study of the internal structure and dynamics of active geological faults using a complex of electromagnetic soundings (on the example of the Northern Tien Shan)" (headed by Dr. Anatoly Rybin) - the project has successfully passed the expert evaluation of the Russian Science Foundation and research work in this area will be carried out in 2022-2023.

The most urgent problem of modern science is to ensure continuity, train highly qualified scientific personnel and popularize scientific activity among young people. Therefore, the issue of maintaining communication with the universities of Kyrgyzstan is of great importance for the Scientific Station of the Russian Academy of Sciences. So, in 2021, the joint laboratory of Geophysics, created on the basis of the Faculty of Physics and Electronics of the Kyrgyz National University named after. J. Balasagyn. The Research Station accepted students from the American University of Central Asia for educational and industrial practices.

Due to the restrictions caused by the global epidemiological situation, in 2021 the Research Station of RAS held two scientific events in an online format.

From April 28 to April 30, 2021, the XIII International Conference of Young Scientists and Students "MODERN TECHNIQUES AND TECHNOLOGIES IN SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH" was held at the Research Station. During three working days of the Conference, students and young scientists from Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Russia and Ukraine presented about 50 reports in three thematic areas.

From June 28 to July 2, 2021, within the framework of the Year of Science and Technology in Russia, the VIII International Symposium "Problems of Geodynamics and Geoecology of Inland Orogens" was held, dedicated to the 85th anniversary of the birth of Yuri Andreevich Trapeznikov – one of the founders and first director of RS RAS. During the working days of Symposium, sectional sessions were held on six thematic areas, where about 100 participants from seven countries (Russia, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Ukraine and Japan) made oral online presentations. Despite the remote format of the event, the meetings were held at a high level and were accompanied by heated discussions.

It should be noted that in 2024, as a part of 300th anniversary of the Russian Academy of Sciences celebration, both the Youth Conference and the Symposium are also scheduled to be held at the Research Station of RAS in Bishkek city. All information about the events will be published on the RS RAS website: www.gdirc.ru.
