International Research Center - Geodynamic Proving Ground

The International Research Center - Geodynamic Proving Ground (IRC-GPG) was established on the initiative of Askar Akayev, the President of the Kyrgyz Republic, according to an Agreement between the Government of the Russian Federation and the Government of the Kyrgyz Republic on December 31, 1997. The Center is an international intergovernmental organization having its activity based on the principles of transparency to all interested states, equal rights and mutually beneficial cooperation.

The IRC-GPG was created in 1997 on the basis of the Scientific Station of the Institute for High Temperatures, Russian Academy of Sciences, and other interested organizations of the Russian Federation and the Kyrgyz Republic. Yuri Andreevich Trapeznikov who untimely died in 1999 was the organizer and the first Executive Director of the IRC-GPG.

The following organizations promoted greatly the formation of IRC-GPG:

The Ministry of the Industry, Science and Technology of the Russian Federation ;

Institute for High Temperatures-Accociation of Russian Academy of Sciences;

Agency on Science and Intellectual Properties of Kyrgyz Republic:

US Civilian Research and Development Foundation for the States of Former Soviet Union

The IRC-GPG's activities are mainly aimed at pooling efforts, scientific, economic and financial potential of the interested states to conduct joint research in geodynamics on the basis of scientific technical programs and projects. On the basis of the agreements concluded with the IRC-GPG, the international and national research agencies and institutions and individual scientists and experts from countries involved and not involved in IRC-GPG activity may participate in the research projects conducted within the frameworks of the IRC-GPG activities. The individual scientists and experts take part in the projects through the creation of temporary research teams on the basis of awards and contracts (agreements). The IRC-GPG headquarters is located in the Kyrgyz mountains foothills at an altitude of 1700m, 35 km from Bishkek.
